How to Create a Win Win Business Relationship
I recently got to interview my business bestie Laura Meyer. Laura is the founder of Joy Brand Creative, but more importantly, Laura has scaled a couple of businesses to seven figures of her own. Not only that, she's also helped a lot of other people scale to seven figures and beyond through her company.
If you know Laura, and chances are you might, you know that she is amazing at relationships. Laura knows how to have genuine relationships. That ultimately helps her grow and scale her business and helps make connections that grow and scale other people's businesses as well. That's the topic of her new book, Win Win.
We are going to dive deep into the relationship aspect of community and how to not just have superficial relationships with lots of people, but how to actually know and be known. We’ll also share how those relationships can help you in your business.
Building relationships and finding the perfect collaborator can be a daunting task, but it doesn't have to be. By following these basic guidelines, you can set yourself up for success and find the perfect partner to help grow your business.
Think About What You Can Contribute
The first thing to consider when building relationships and thinking about potential collaborators is what you can bring to the table. This doesn't have to be a grand gesture, but it should be something that shows you are invested in the relationship and want to contribute. For example, this may be a platform, such as a podcast, or LinkedIn or a blog. This is a way in which you can exchange with somebody else who you think would be a good fit to collaborate with.
Look for People Who Solve Similar Problems
When you're in a room full of potential collaborators, you should be looking for people who solve similar problems for your target audience, but from different angles or areas of expertise. This is where the magic happens. When you find someone who complements your skills and expertise, it can open up new opportunities and help you reach new audiences.
Some people are an opportunity to leave them better off than you found them, but other people are going to end up being a really good match for your business. Collaborations are the best way to get started because that's when you see how somebody really operates.
Be Mindful of How Someone Operates
When you're in a collaboration, pay attention to how the other person operates. Are they showing up on time? Are they flustered and running from meeting to meeting? Or are they cool, calm, and collected? This can give you insight into how they will work with clients or their community. If they're disorganized and unreliable in a collaboration, it's likely they will be the same with clients.
Do Your Due Diligence
It's important to do your due diligence when considering potential collaborators. This means getting to know them, understanding their values and reputation, and making sure they align with yours. It's easy to get caught up in the excitement of a new relationship, but it's important to remember that your reputation is on the line. By taking the time to get to know someone and understand how they operate, you can ensure that you're making a wise choice.
Now we all have bad days, bad months, and even bad years. Just because somebody doesn't show up in a particular way that you had modeled in your mind doesn't mean that they won't show up down the road. It's also not a reason to write off relationships completely.
If you think about it, not every landing page converts at a hundred percent. Not all of your relationships are going to convert at a hundred percent, but your relationships will convert at a much higher rate than your landing pages.
Set Yourself Up For Success
Building relationships and finding the perfect collaborator can be a daunting task, but by following these guidelines, you can set yourself up for success. Remember to think about what you can contribute, look for people who solve similar problems, do your due diligence, and be mindful of how someone operates. With these tips in mind, you'll be well on your way to building strong relationships and finding the perfect collaborator to help grow your business.
