In September of 2023, Ali Kay, a member of our RETAIN group consulting program, experienced a monumental shift in her membership growth, tripling her members in just a week. The journey from a thriving artist to a successful membership owner has been nothing short of remarkable. She shared how she did it and what’s next for her in a recent podcast interview. Strategic Launch Approach:
In preparation for closing the doors to her membership for the first time, Ali hosted a $10 workshop week. The week included samples of what members would experience inside the membership. 7,000 people participated in the workshop week.
Community Engagement:
Leveraging the strength of her existing membership community and a Facebook group, Ali fostered a supportive environment that encouraged member interaction and retention. Members were given free access to the workshop. Advice from current members was featured throughout the workshop. The work of the workshop participants was also highlighted throughout the week.
Create Urgency:
The live trainings were hosted in the Facebook group so recordings were available, but only for a limited time. This motivated participants to consume the recordings before the offer to join the membership closed. Once the membership doors closed, the recordings went away. This contributed to the 40% conversion rate.
Ad Strategy:
Collaborating with an ads manager, Ali optimized her ad campaigns to reach a wider audience and drive conversions. The $10 fee for the workshop allowed her to spend $66,000 on Meta Ads to get people into the workshop without being in the red.
Nurturing Leads:
Ali’s team sends a weekly newsletter to keep her leads warm and nurtured. She actively posts helpful tips on social media but no longer teaches free courses and pop-up workshops. She has a PDF freebie she uses to grow her email list. She also has a $29 mini course and allowed participants to apply the cost towards membership.
Balancing Growth and Retention:
After her fast growth, Ali focused on retention by hiring a community manager trained through our Cultivate program and putting her team into our RETAIN group consulting program. Focusing not just on acquisition but on retention helped her build a sustainable membership model with a retention rate as high as 95%.
